Math Games K-5: Math Games K-5

Games provide child centered activity for learning addition, subtraction and multiplication as well as developing spatial reasoning and strategy.  The games are either a game board or card set, and some require chips or dice that must be provided by the parent or teacher.   Most games are ready to play while others require some cutting (cards), or a game board made by the teacher (Boomerang).  All games are printed on colorful cardstock and include clear instructions for play. 

 

Boomerang                   Grade 2.   2 games, 2 players each game.  Two gameboards (14”x14” grid) must be made by teacher.  Students position pieces made of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 squares on grid and count score by number of squares covered on each turn.  Some doubling possible.

 

Coin War                     Grades K-1.   2 players.  Similar to war – children figure out larger number on cards by comparing  nickels and pennies.

 

Cover-Up 12               K, 3 players.  Students take turns rolling one die, count dots, and put that many chips on the game board. 

 

Doubles Cover-Up            Grade 1-2.  Three gameboards, 2 players each.  Students take turns rolling one 6-sided die (not provided) and covering the double of the number rolled.

 

Doubles + 1 Cover Up            Grades 1-2.  Three gameboards, 2 players each.  Students take turns rolling one 10-sided die (not provided) and covering the double plus one more than the number rolled.

 

Fifty Chips                    K.  Includes gameboards for 3 players.  Students take turns rolling one or two dice and placing that many chips on a grid. 

 

Five Plus Bingo             Grade 1-2.  Includes 4 game boards for 4 players.  Players add 5 to the number rolled and try to get 6 in a row.

 

Football                        Grades K-1.  Two players.  Includes playing cards 1-10 and football gridiron game board.  Cards used as in playing war.  Player with higher total advances one 10-yard line toward goal.

 

Fraction Box                           Grades 4-5.   3 different game boards for 2 players each.  As in “Dots and Squares” players box fractions and shade in corresponding areas on “wholes.”  First to completely shade their 4 “wholes” wins.           

 

4/5 In A Row               Grades 2-4.  Includes 4 game boards with sums of increasing difficulty, 2 players per game board.  Provide your own markers.  Players select 2 addends from grid and cover the sum on a larger grid.  Involves single or double-digit addition and strategy.

 

Hypersonic                   Grades 3-5. 2-3 players.  Game board is a 7x7 grid with numbers 1-9 written randomly in squares.  Players turn over a disc with a number from 1 to 50, and try to find a combination of 3 numbers on the grid that may be multiplied, added, and/or subtracted to equal the number on the disc.

 

Just Cards                    Grades K-4.  Set of 36 cards with 4 each of numbers 1-10.  The 4 “suits” are circles, squares, triangles, and pentagons.  Includes instructions for games that use addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.                      

           

Nickelodeon                 Grades 1-3.   3 game boards of increasing difficulty, 2 players each game.  This addition game requires some strategy.   One game board uses addends 1-6, the second uses 3-8, and the third uses 1-12.

 

Nim With Cards            Grades 3-5.  Enough cards for 3 games of 2 players each.  Students take turns selecting from cards numbered 1-6.  Winner selects the card that brings the cumulative total closest to 31.  May be + or – .

 

Nine Mens Morris            Grades 1-5.  Includes 3 game boards for 2 players each.  Players move markers to points on sides of concentric squares, trying to make 3 in a row.  Involves spatial and strategic thinking. 

 

One Less                      Grade 1.  Includes 3 game boards for 2 players each.  Players subtract 1 from the number rolled.  Use up 10 chips to win.

 

One More                    Grade 1.  Includes 3 game boards for 2 players each.  Players add 1 to the number rolled.  Use up 10 chips to win.

 

Piggy Bank                   K.   2–3 players.  Teacher glues paper coins (provided) on back of cards.  Students group cards marked with nickels and pennies into sets that equal 5 cents.

 

Punta                            Grade 1.  Includes cards numbered 1-6 for 2-3 players.  Students turn over  a Tile Card and match the amount  shown (1-12) with cards selected cards from their hand.

 

Quartette                      Grade 1.  3 game boards for 2 players each.  This is a spatial reasoning game played on a 4x4 grid.  In turn, players each maneuver their 4 chips up and down or sideways, trying to make 4 in a row.

 

Rio                               Grades 3-5.   2-3 players.  Teacher provides a 6-, 8-, 10-, and 12-sided die and chips.  Includes instructions for 3 games that provide practice in multiplication.

 

Salute                           Grades 3-5.   3 players.  Includes cards numbered 1-9, 10-90, and 100-900.  Two students salute with a card in hand while a 3rd player announces the sum (or product) of the 2 cards.  Players only see the other’s card, and race to identify the card they hold.

 

Sneaky Snake              Grade 1.  3 gameboards for 2 players each.  Students take turns rolling two dice, adding or subtracting, and covering the numbers 1-12 on the game board. 

 

Space Race                  Grades 3-4.  3 game boards, 2 players each.   Each game uses 3 dice numbered 1-6 and/or 7-12.  Students multiply any 2 of the 3 dice, trying to make a product that will allow them to advance to the next base.

 

Subtraction Games            Grade 1.  Includes 4 lotto game boards, a set of subtraction problem cards, plus cards and gridiron game board for Double War With Subtraction.  Only single digit subtraction.

 

Tabby Cats                  Grades 3-4.   2-3 players.  Players take turns rolling a die and moving that many spaces.  Numbers on game board squares are multiplied and the product covered on the Tabby Cats score card.

 

Tapatan                        Grades K-2.  Includes 3 game boards for 2 players each.  Similar to tic-tac-toe, players move markers on a pattern of lines and dots to make 3 in a row.  Involves spatial reasoning and strategy.

 

Tens With Playing Cards            Grade 1.  Includes 36 cards (4 each of 1-9) for 2 players.  Nine cards at a time are arranged in a 3x3 matrix.  Students look for pairs that make 10.  Instructions included for more games with pairs that equal 10.

 

Toujours 12                  Grades 1-2.   2–3 players.  Students try to make 12 by adding 4 numbers.  Strategy involves subtraction.

 

Twenty-Twenty            Grades 2-3.   2-3 players.  Cards numbered 1-10 are placed in rows and columns.  Players try to make totals of 20 in either direction.

 

Two More                    Grade 1.  Includes 3 game boards for 2 players each.  Players add 2 to the number rolled.  Use up 10 chips to win.

 

Uncover 10                  Grades K-1.   3 game boards for 2 players each.  Players roll two 0-5 dice, find sum, and remove markers from spaces numbered 1-10 that would equal the sum of the dice.

 

What’s the Difference?            Grades 2 – 3.  Black and white master copy.   2 players.  Students use addition with addends 1-8 and then subtraction of highest and lowest column sums and row sums.  Involves strategy in placement of numbers.

 

XIX                             Grades 1-5.  Includes 3 game boards for 2 players each.  Students take turns removing 1, 2, or 3 markers from game board.  Person who takes last piece wins.

 

ZigZag                          Grades 2-3.  Three gameboards, 2 players each.  Students take turns rolling three dice and adding or subtracting in any order to match a number on the game board that will let their marker advance toward the goal.

 

Chips and dice are not included with these games.
